They're Repeating across America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the story of a mighty king emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.

The obvious and straightforward truth that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest of Us

Hence I have become encouraged to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by relationship to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected through connection to that which renders it special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In both situations does it mean feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both humility and conviction, a blend that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
