At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
